Golfing in a winter wonderland
Winter is coming. But never fear, it’s not all doom and gloom, writes Teeofftimes’s Market Sales Manager Stevie Brown. The east coast of Scotland and North East England regions still offer some fantastic golf during the off-season. So grab your wooly hats, hand warmers and hip flasks (filled with hot coffee of course!) and visit Teeofftimes by GolfNow to start your winter golf at some of these outstanding courses…
Newburgh-on-Ythan Golf Club
Newburgh-on-Ythan Golf Club is two miles north of Trump International Links Scotland, mid-way between Royal Aberdeen and Cruden Bay Championship golf clubs (a pretty good spot for golf!). Situated on the Ythan Estuary, the course overlooks the North Sea and Sands of Forvie National Nature Reserve. The club was founded in 1888 and is a challenging par-72 Championship links course that demands accurate golf from tee to green. The clubhouse was opened in 2001 by the 1999 Open Champion Paul Lawrie. The 540 yard 18th hole once laid claim to being one of the longest finishing holes in Scotland.

Drumoig Golf Course
On the outskirts of St Andrews lies one of the best inland venues in the region. Drumoig Golf Course is set on 250 acres of spectacular Fife countryside, which weaves through a natural bird and wildlife haven. The 18-hole, Championship style, par-73 course at Drumoig is a hugely underrated golfing challenge that’s full of interesting holes. From the back tees the course provides an excellent test for the more advanced golfer, while from the front tees the amateur golfer can enjoy their game. The course is prepared to the highest standard and continues to grow in maturity and reputation.

Monifieth Golf Links
Monifieth is where Tom Watson had his first experience of links golf a week before he won his first Open Championship. Situated just 30 minutes from St Andrews and right next door to Carnoustie Golf Links, Monifieth offers year-round golf on both of their courses and very rarely moves to winter greens. The Medal Course is the main course here and is used as an Open qualifying venue. Built over undulating links with ridge dunes covered in gorse, it’s a tough test for any golfer and keeping the ball on the fast firm greens will be tricky, especially when the wind blows in from the Firth of Tay.

Fairmont St Andrews
Golf courses in Scotland are among the best in the world and Fairmont St Andrews – situated in the “Home of Golf” – is proud to be recognised as one of the country’s top golf resorts. Fairmont St Andrews features two fantastic 18-hole courses – the Kittocks and the Torrance. The Torrance course was designed by Scottish golfing legend Sam Torrance and vaunts classic Scottish revetted bunkers and large greens. It was an Open qualifying venue for the 2010 Open Championship. The Kittocks course has some of the most beautiful holes in Scottish golf with stunning views over the dramatic Fife coastline. A trip to Fairmont St Andrew will not disappoint.

Goswick Links Golf Club
Ranked number 1 in Northumberland and an Open qualifying venue for this year’s Open Championship at Carnoustie, Goswick Golf Course is a championship golf course in every sense of the word. It is situated six miles south of the beautiful and historic town of Berwick upon Tweed, Northumberland, on the east side of the A1 and an hour from Newcastle and Edinburgh. The course measures a mean 6,803 yards from the medal tees and is rarely affected by the weather making it playable all year round from dedicated tees to full greens. All this set in the most stunning coastal scenery in Northumberland – a designated area of outstanding natural beauty. Your visit to this superb gem will be fondly remembered.

Leven Links Golf Course
The history of Leven Links is, suffice to say, long and complex. But what is most important is the nature of the ground upon which the course is built. From the start of their round, golfers will be conscious of the fairways running along the valleys between these old dunes – it makes for superb definition and a true test of links golf as the slopes and bounces of these natural obstacles come into play. At the end of it all lies one of the finest finishing holes in golf. Two well struck shots are required to reach a target of quite epic proportions and slope over the yawning, demonic Scoonie Burn which winds its way around the right and front of the green. This course is a must at any time of the year.
