Away Days: Liverpool

Planning a city break? Travel within the UK & Ireland among UK & Ireland residents is at an all time high. More and more of us are browsing every corner of the isles and discovering the hidden gems and beauty spots that some of us are fortunate enough to call ‘Home’.

In our Away Days series, each month we’re looking at the top UK & Ireland city break destinations and showing you that when you’re packing your weekend bag, you should be sure to make room for the clubs!

Each Golf Club we feature has been recognised for it’s proximity to the city centre, ease of access, customer reviews and/or their clubhouse facilities.

Whether taking the car, travelling by train or plane, Liverpool is one of the big hitters when it comes to UK city breaks. Throughout the year, this North-West hotspot is inundated by music lovers, sports fanatics and the occasional(!) hen/stag party.

So, whatever brings you to Merseyside, here’s five courses you and your travelling party should consider when making the trip…

Wirral Golf Club – 4.6 miles from Liverpool Lime Street

Four of the five courses on our list will require a hop across the River Mersey, including this, our closest course to Lime Street Station – Wirral Golf Club. At 4.6miles, you can reach Wirral GC in 15mins by taxi, additionally, rail options are also available. A club steeped in history, this wonderful track was originally laid out in 1894 as a 9-hole course by local-lad Harry Hilton. Recognise the name? Two-time winner of the Open, Hilton went on to become a World Golf Hall of Famer.

At 5,000 yards, this won’t be the longest course you’ll play. However, don’t be fooled by the numbers of the scorecard, there are plenty of hazards along the way! A friendly club with a fully licensed bar for a post-round debrief. Grab a morning tee time and you’ll be back Concert Square before you know it!

Heswall Golf Club – 9.7 miles from Liverpool Lime Street

A little further out than other courses that have made our Liverpool golf course guide, Heswall lies approx. 10 miles west of the city on the West Wirral peninsula. The club is home to what is, quite simply, an outstanding Championship course.

With a wonderful clubhouse serving delicious bites and perfect pints, Heswall is well worth the trip. Back in 2006 a young Patrick Reed made the same trip for the Junior Open Championship, a title the American secured after a final round of 74. So there’s your marker, shoot 73 or better and you’ll have bettered the 2018 Masters Champion.

A 25-30minute drive, it’ll likely be best splitting a taxi for this one.

Bowring Park Golf Club – 5.1 miles from Liverpool Lime Street

20mins along the Northern line, disembark at Roby and you’re seconds away from the fantastic Bowring Park & Golf Course – England’s oldest municipal course. With gorgeous greens, rolling fairways and an array of challenging holes, you and your group will thoroughly enjoy your day at Bowring Park.

A light bite before teeing off will set you up perfectly for a post-round visit to The Coach House; food and drink available for all the squad!

Prenton Golf Club – 4.9 miles from Liverpool Lime Street

We’re back across the Mersey for a parkland test on the Wirral, tackle 6457 yards of Prenton Golf Club. Our community of golfers love the challenge at Prenton, so don’t just take our word for it, check out the reviews!

‘Every aspect was perfect, decent tee boxes, fairways like carpets, top quality greens. Definition between fairway, rough, first cuts. Pro in the shop was great and the bar at the end was great as well. Will definitely play again!’

Fantastic golf, incredible greens and a wonderful 19th – what more do you need?

Bidston Golf Club – 6.1 miles from Liverpool Lime Street

Finally, we’re rounding off our Liverpool course suggestions at Bidston Golf Club.

6,000 yards off the whites, this parkland test will provide the perfect outing on your trip to Liverpool.

The Mersey rail service from Lime St station can get you on the tee within 30mins. A handy option if playing in a fourball and travelling with bags & trolleys. With food and drink available post round, if the 19th hole is your favourite, the clubhouse won’t disappoint. Rehydrate and ready yourself for a night on the town.

Five courses to ensure you’ve completed your Liverpool city break in style. Go Play.
