Celebrating a decade of golf at Killeen Castle
Killeen Castle Golf Club in Co. Meath celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, so what better time to experience their incredible Championship course? GOLFNOW’s Senior Account Manager, Ryan Bell, writes.
Killeen Castle’s Jack Nicklaus Signature Course opened in 2009 and was described by the 18-time Major Winner and course designer as ‘one of my proudest designs’. The Co. Meath venue has played host to the 2011 Solheim Cup match between Europe and USA, in addition to three Ladies Irish Opens from 2010 to 2012.

The 630 acre estate also hosts a number of signature residential properties, The Dave Pelz Scoring Game School, Fore Golf Custom Club Fitters and a Norman Castle dating back to 1181. The 12th Century castle will become the focal point of this 630 acre estate following a recent grant of planning permission for a 177 room luxury hotel, including the renovation and restoration of the original structure which will house 17 suites and a number of dining rooms. The new three storey structure partnering this renovation will incorporate 160 rooms, a day spa, function rooms and a winter garden restaurant.
Continual improvement
As well as ambitious plans for this luxurious hotel and spa – which will no doubt turn Killeen Castle into a premier Play & Stay location – there has been major investment in the upkeep of their Championship course. The golf club has just purchased a fleet of state-of-the-art John Deere machinery, including tees, fairway, greens and rough mowers, utility tractors, gator utility vehicles, sprayers, top dressers and bunker rakes – with the latest E-Cut hybrid electric models now forming an important part in future proofing the work of Mark Collins (Course Superintendent) and his team.
The purchase of the John Deere fleet is the most recent of investments made on the part of Killeen Castle in it’s future which includes an upgrade and enhancement of it’s rental golf cars and trolleys to the latest state of the art GPS units, re-kerbing of the entire clubhouse compound in addition to significant works taking place around the golf course and peripherals to enhance the sanding and drainage profile of the golf course. These works in addition to the purchase of the new fleet will work to ensure championship standard golfing conditions for members and visitors alike all year round.
