Inland gems for the winter
As we head into the winter months and the harsher weather creeps in, many golfers looking to brave the elements flock towards the coast in search of the links. With the abundance of great courses offered across Ayrshire, East Lothian and Fife, they can certainly be forgiven for migrating to the coastline. However, I feel that some of the great inland tracks are wrongly overlooked during the colder months, and have listed my three must-plays for the winter. Lanark Golf Club
Lanark is one of Scotland’s finest moorland golf courses with an impressive pedigree, laying claim to being the 25th oldest club in the world. Testament to its fantastic test of golf, Lanark has hosted regional pre-qualifying for the Open Championship on 11 occasions, The British Girls Championship, The Scottish Girls Championship, The Girls Home Internationals, The Scottish Boys Championship and is a regular fixture on the Tartan Tour. The course is built on sand which helps make the course playable year-round, with undulating, true greens and fast running fairways. The variation of holes, combined with the glorious moorland setting, make this a must-play course.

The Musselburgh Golf Club
Next we head to another Open final qualifier, The Musselburgh. In an area where links courses make up most of the golfing landscape, Musselburgh provides an entirely different offering, but prides itself on being a parkland course that maintains great condition throughout all seasons. Designed by the renowned James Braid, the par-71, 6,700-yard golf course is a serious test of golf for even the most accomplished players. The course is built around a bend of the river Esk and the holes meander their way brilliantly through the trees. Just watch out for the Craigie burn that comes into play on a number of holes. Making the correct club choice is essential at The Musselburgh!

The Roxburghe Hotel & Golf Course
Last, but certainly not least, we have The Roxburghe. This is one of my personal favourites in the UK and is consistently ranked in Scotland’s Top 10 inland courses. As one would expect with the course being set in the heart of the Scottish Borders, views across the rolling landscape are jaw-dropping. At over 7,100 yards from the back tees, this is a true championship course. It hosted The Scottish Seniors Open between 2001 – 2005 and Sergio Garcia still holds the record here, shooting 66. With huge USGA greens and free draining fairways the course remains in great condition throughout the season. The highlight comes at the signature 14th Hole, aptly named ‘The Viaduct’. The river Teviot runs down the left hand side of this 571-yard par-5 and the Roxburghe Viaduct provides a stunning backdrop from the elevated tee box.
